"Living the Legend"

The Mackay North State High School Lest We Forget History Tour was an emotional WW1 commemorative pilgrimage to Gallipoli and France undertaken by 13 senior history students in September, 1999.

The video, "Living the Legend", is the story of this ambitious undertaking - from the planning, through the tour itself, to the final presentation of grave photographs to grateful families in Mackay.

It is also the story of the brave Australians who fought in WW1, 60 000 of whom never returned. The students provide an informative outline of the battles fought and an interesting guide to the Australian battlefields, cemeteries and memorials that can be found in Turkey and northern Europe today.

"Living the Legend" was written, filmed and produced by the students.

It is their story, told by them. They aim to provide a unique "young person" viewpoint of this important historical era in a clear and concise way, so that their peers can easily understand and appreciate the enormous sacrifices made by our ancestors.

It is also hoped that the video might inspire other young people to visit these sacred places that are so closely linked to our country’s heritage.
