VC Corner Memorial & the Australian Memorial Park
('Cobber's' Sculpture)
| VC Corner Cemetery is the only all Australian cemetery in France and the memorial situated at its rear commemorates 1 299 Australians killed in the infamous Battle of Fromelles (19-20 July, 1916) who have no known grave. The cemetery has no headstones - instead, 410 red roses grow above the unidentified bodies of Australian soldiers whose bodies were found in no mans land years after the battle. Each rose represents a fallen soldier. VC Corner Cemetery |
The Australian Memorial Park is situated just down the road and around the remains of German bunkers on the part of the line that was captured by the 14th Brigade during the battle. The park now contains a bronze sculpture entitled 'Cobbers', which depicts Sgt Fraser rescuing a wounded mate from the battlefield. |
