MENIN GATE MEMORIAL

The Menin Gate Memorial can be found in the town of Ieper (Ypres) Belgium and is one of the most significant of all CWGC memorials.

It is a large and impressive memorial which lists the names of 54 896 men killed in the Ypres Salient whom have no known grave.

There are 6 176 Australians commemorated on the memorial with all Australian infantry battalions represented.  Also, a Ross Bastian Australian plaque can be found on the grassed area on the northern side.

One of the great traditions connected with the commemoration of those who were killed in WW1 occurs at the Menin Gate.  Each night at 8pm, the traffic is stopped and the buglers from the Ieper Fire Brigade play the 'Last Post'.  This ceremony has been continuous since 1927.
