Wed 15 September

Depart Mackay - Virgin Airlines DJ 916 at 4.10 pm

Arrive Bris - 5.30 pm

Depart Bris – Thai Airways TG 984 at 10.40 pm

 

Thailand

Thurs 16 September

Arrive Bangkok - 5 am.

Meet bus and guide (Jack) and drive straight to Kanchanburi.

Visit the Bridge on the River Kwai and catch the train from Kanchanaburi up to the Wampo viaduct.

Explore the viaduct

Lunch at the restaurant near the viaduct.

On to the elephant camp to ride elephants.

Then to River Kwai Village Hotel – overnight. Dinner included.

 

Friday 17 September

To Hellfire Pass - catch bus/truck down to the old Hintok station and walk back to Hellfire Pass over cleared railway route – about 3 km.

Group memorial service in Hellfire Pass cutting.

Climb the stairs up to the Hellfire Pass Museum.

On to Home Phu Toey Resort for lunch. Visit Sir Weary Dunlop Museum , Jack Chalker Gallery and replica of a POW camp.

Travel back to Kanchanaburi to the Duen Shine Resort.

 

Saturday 18 September

Visit Thai Burma Railway Centre in Kanchanaburi and meet Rod Beattie

Cross the road to Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and conduct group service and the individual grave services.

Visit Chungkai Cemetery – on the outskirts of town.

Free time in Kanchanaburi – lunch and shopping.

Bus back to Bangkok .

Drop off at airport.

Depart Bangkok at 11.55 pm – Lufthansa LH 745

 

Sunday 19 September

Arrive Istanbul Airport – 12.50 pm - Lufthansa LH 745

Meet guide – Gokalp Kasim - coach to Canakkale.

Dinner – hotel buffet – Hotel Helen

 

Monday 20 September

Morning:

To Anzac Cove – stop off at Gaba Tepe Museum area (no museum today) to explain the terrain to students.

To Anzac Cove – Ari Burnu Point – Ataturk Memorial.

Students to walk along beach down to Beach Cemetery .

Walk back to Ari Burnu and around point to Anzac Commemorative Site.

Bus north to Hill 60 area. View ridges from here.

Back around to Eceabat via Bigali.

Lunch in Eceabat.

Ferry back to Canakkale - free afternoon

Dinner – hotel buffet

 

Tuesday 21 September

To Anzac Cove – stop off at Gaba Tepe Museum – students to visit museum.

To Shrapnel Valley Cemetery and walk to Plugge's Plateau.

Packed lunch at Shrapnel Valley Cemetery .

Bus up to Lone Pine. Explore the cemetery and surrounding area.

Walk to Johnstone's Jolly and Australian trenches at Lone Pine.

Down track to 4 th Battalion Parade Ground Cemetery & Braund's Hill.

Drive along 2 nd Ridge past Quinn's Post Cemetery. Stop at Turkish Cemetery .

On to Nek Cemetery . Explore area & walk down to Walker 's Ridge.

Back to ferry – to Canakkale. Rest of afternoon free.

Dinner – hotel buffet

 

Wednesday 22 September

Commemorations day.

To Anzac Cove. Straight to Lone Pine Memorial – group commemorative service.

Quinn's Post Cemetery – 2 grave commemorations.

Drive up to Baby 700 Cemetery and on to Chunik Bair. Explore area and have packed lunch.

Back to 2 nd Ridge. Walk from Lone Pine down to Shell Green Cemetery and on to Shrapnel Valley Cemetery

(grave commemoration).

Walk on to Beach Cemetery (grave commemoration).

Another walk along Anzac Cove. Have a swim at the Anzac Commemorative Site.

Back to ferry – to Canakkale

Dinner – hotel buffet

 

Thursday 23 September

Pre dawn start.

Catch ferry before dawn to Anzac Cove to experience dawn on the beach.

Back to Canakkale and hotel for breakfast.

Free morning. Students to organise own lunch.

After lunch – ferry across to Eceabat.

To Kilitbahir Forts.

On to Cape Helles – visit Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery – grave commemoration.

Visit Cape Helles British Memorial / French Cemetery / Turkish Memorial.

Up to Anzac Cove (Ari Burnu) to watch the sunset – say goodbye to Anzac.

Back to ferry – to Canakkale – late dinner at hotel – buffet

 

Friday 24 September

To Troy – explore the ancient ruins.

Check out the forts at Dardanos.

Back to Canakkale for lunch – free afternoon – prepare for late evening departure from hotel.

Dinner – hotel buffet

Evening (approx. 23.00 hours) – leave hotel to travel overnight to Istanbul Airport .

Saturday 25 September

Depart Istanbul Airport 8.05 am – Lufthansa LH3353

Arrive Munich Airport – 9.35 am

Depart Munich Airport – 10.50 am – Lufthansa LH4244

Arrive Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport – 12.25 pm

Head north to Amiens & Somme region

Bypass Amiens to the south and visit 3 cemeteries to the north west and north of Amiens :

  • Crouy British Cemetery
  • Vignacourt British Cemetery
  • Puchervillers British Cemetery

Back into Amiens to hotel – Central Anzac

Dinner – students to buy in Amiens

 

Sunday 26 September

Meet up with Yves Fohlen

To Australian National Memorial for group commemorative service

Cemetery to visit on the way out:

  • Daours Communal Cemetery

On to Australian National Memorial – group memorial service and grave commemoration.

Visit Hamel Memorial.

Cemetery visits:

  • Cerisy Gailley French Cemetery
  • Crucifix Corner Cemetery (Villers Bretonneux)
  • Adelaide Cemetery

Visit Victoria Primary School and Australian museum.

Back into Amiens for lunch (students to buy).

Free afternoon and evening.

Dinner – students to buy.

 

Monday 27 September

Breakfast – hotel

Full day on the Somme Battlefields + cemetery visits:

  • Dernacourt Communal Cemetery

To Lochnagar Crater at La Boiselle.

  • Becourt British Cemetery

On to Pozieres – stop and visit Australian 1 st Division Memorial. Then out to Thiepval Memorial before heading further along to Newfoundland Park .

Back to Albert for lunch. Then back to Pozieres and visit Windmill Memorial

Then:

  • Courcellete British Cemetery
  • Adanac Military Cemetery

Head back south through to Longueval and on to Delville Wood Memorial.

Into Peronne. Visit Australian 2 nd Division Memorial and:

•  Peronne Communal Cemetery

To Formule 1 at Asservillers

Tuesday 28 September

Into the village of Bullecourt to visit Jean Letaille's private museum and the Australian Digger sculpture. Lunch with Claude and Collette Durand at the next village of Hendecourt .

Afternoon – head north to Belgian border

Cemeteries on the way:

  • Brown's Copse Cemetery
  • VC Corner Cemetery & Cobbers Sculpture
  • Rue Petillion Military Cemetery
  • Outtersteene Wood Cemetery
  • Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension

After cemetery visit, students will have time to buy some dinner.

Wednesday 29 September

Breakfast – hotel

To Ieper

Cemetery visits on the way:

  • Trois Abres Cemetery
  • Strand Military Cemetery
  • Underhill Farm Cemetery
  • Toronto Ave Cemetery

To village of Mesen (Messines) and visit church

On to Ieper – to accommodation Gasthof T'zweerd in Groote Markt.

After lunch – group walk to Menin Gate and then along Ramparts to Ramparts Cemetery .

Rest of the fternoon is free.

5pm – Group commemorative service at Menin Gate – at Australian plaque next to memorial – with Ivan & Marie Claire Sinnaeve, Johan and Hilde Durnez & Anny De Decker.

6.30pm – Dinner (all) at Gasthof – included.

8 pm – Last Post Service – students involved – wreath laying & Ode.

 

Thursday 30 September

Breakfast – hotel

Head east out of Ieper along Menin Rd.

Cemetery visits:

  • Menin Road South Military Cemetery

To Hill 60 memorial area.

  • Hooge Crater Cemetery

To Polygon Wood and Buttes New British Cemetery / 5 th Division Memorial.

Explore cemetery and wood and have packed lunch at De Dreve pub on the corner of the wood.

To Tyne Cot Cemetery .

To Langemark and visit the German Cemetery .

Head back towards Ieper and stop at the town of Sint Jan to visit the house of ‘Shrapnel Charlie' to view a display of making metal soldiers out of shrapnel.

Back to Ieper – rest of the day free.

Dinner – students to buy.

 

Friday 1 October

Breakfast – hotel

Travel to Paris via cemeteries on the French coast

West to Poperinghe. Cemetery visit:

  • Nine Elms British Cemetery
  • Wimereux Military Cemetery
  • Etaples Military

On to Paris to accommodation – Hotel Arley in Rue Vialla (near Eiffel Tower).

Paris

Saturday 2 October

Breakfast – hotel

Morning visit to the Eiffel Tower

Afternoon - catch the train out to the Palace of Versailles .

Back into Paris in the late afternoon - some general sightseeing + some shopping

Explore the area around the hotel for a good place for dinner – students to buy.

 

Sunday 3 October

Breakfast – hotel

More exploring of Paris :

  • Champs de Elysee
  • Arch De Triomphe
  • Notre Dame Cathedral
  • Shopping and eating

Dinner - group dinner + birthday parties at a Paris restaurant - kitty

 

Monday 4 October

Breakfast – included hotel

Charter bus to Paris Disney

In afternoon, get bus back to Charles De Gaulle Airport
