Legerwood Memorial Trees
The town of Legerwood in northern Tasmania has a strong connection to WW1, with 7 of its local men being killed during the war.
In 1918, memorial trees were planted to honour these fallen soldiers.
In 2001, the community was informed that the trees were no longer safe. Instead of having them removed completely, the community employed a chainsaw carver, Eddie Freeman, to sculpt the trees into depictions of the soldiers and their lives.
The resulting carved memorials are a unique and moving memorial to the men of the community.
The Spirit of Anzac tour group honoured these 7 soldiers and passed on the grave and memorial photos to the Legerwood community on the group's return.
